Why Japanese
I am starting to learn Japanese because I am an East Asian Studies major. I am specializing in Korean history, so I have been learning Korean for almost four years. I am starting to take Japanese classes now because I want to focus on the colonial period in Korean history, so many documents I will need to read will be in Japanese. So far, Japanese is very hard and I am pretty bad at Hiragana, so I think learning kanji will be a real challenge. But I am ready to study hard and improve my Japanese!
I'm also an EALAC major and I'm taking Japanese for similar reasons! I'm interested in the history of Manchuria and Taiwan under Japanese colonization. I think it is especially difficult to start a new language at this point, because it's daunting to imagine you'll have to get it up to the level of the language you already know. がんばってください!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds so interesting! I hope we can compare notes sometime :) I definitely agree that it's really hard to start taking a new language now, but hopefully it will pay off
DeleteThat's a great reason to learn Japanese! I would love to know more about what you've learned about Korean history.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I've been focusing mainly on the interaction between religion and politics during the colonial period, but I've taken classes about many different aspects of Korean history.
